Recent Summer Adventures

Remember that one time in high school when I went on the trek and it was awful? Like traumatizing awful? (Okay I'm slightly exaggerating.) But I do. And I also remember how I swore I would never do anything pioneer-related for a while. Luckily, I was somehow able to recover, even without therapy, and take Jack to the recent "Pioneer Craft Fair" down the street. This was a special occasion so in addition to the buildings, wagons, and games that are there regularly; there was also doll making (we skipped this), a blacksmith, lots of old time-y weapons, candles, hand carved caskets (seriously), and a man playing some type of "pioneer" instrument that sounded very similar to a recorder. PLUS, there was a mountain man (wearing white leather chaps with fringe) who brought a plethora of Native American stuff - including a real teepee! (Very Jeremiah Johnson (that was for you, Dad)) Anyways, that was Jack's fav.

Another adventure we went on recently was to the nearby Hare Krishna Temple to feed the llamas. Sound crazy? Like a weird mix between George Harrison and Napoleon Dynamite? Well don't worry, it was awesome. The temple is about 15 minutes away and anyone is invited to come and feed their llamas anytime - as long as you bring your own apples or carrots (no casserole). We went with our besties and Jack LOVED it. He was not shy about feeding the llamas out of his hands and at one point I even caught him trying to get in their cage. We were also pleased to find there were more than just the llamas! They had a couple peacocks running around, a talking parrot, a few other caged birds and a koi pond.

As you can probably tell, Jack loves animals. He discovered animals in his books and it has been fun to watch him realize that they are actually real. We've been to several zoos, the farm, aquariums, and even spent time just walking around PetsMart because Jack cannot get enough. So earlier this week we invited some friends to come with us and put our pass of all passes to use at the Tracy Aviary. Jack had a great time running around and checking out all the different types of birds. Besides the constant bird poo smell, we had fun too! Either way, getting Chipotle for lunch on the way home made it totally worth it.
